Indeed. The global nature of our networks means we are now exposed to more information so must filter and prioritise. It's a shame but a fact of modern (social) life.

We need to either strip back our networks to simplify things (and potentially miss out) or find another way to work.

It's a vicious circle we've created on social media. In order to get links viewed and discussion begun we must have a multitude of followers hoping that one (or more) will take the time to begin a discussion, yet by having so many we follow and follow us back we then have a difficult time doing the same for them.

Yousaf - not much has really changed. Google is just moving from a comapny with siloed applications to a flat organisation which is, in a way, more like Facebook. The single privacy policy shoudl actually enhance the experience as Google has a better picture of US rather than multiple fragments.

Nithin - I would expect most power users would feel the same as they spend a lot of time in various networks, Google reader and on Techmeme etc. I have noticed that some are using it as a simple means of curation and then pushing the list out ot their followers but obviously this is no longer available to them and they'll have to do the curation themselves.

Great post. Very similar to the thoughts that were going through my head when I heard about the Summify acquisition news. But one thought here, although the Summify solution is elegant and all, I always found that I had read most of the stories that were delivered to me. Maybe I am a power user? Don't know, but I lost interest after a month or 2.

So speak of social media like a mythical phoenix that must die and be reborn again from it's ashes regularly. It's probably a somewhat apt comparison as it must change and adapt or risk irrelevancy. Social is designed to change according to people's habits and needs. I think this is a good thing.

I’ve found that so much in business is about building relationships. Social media sites are a great tool for connecting with others and getting your brand out there. It also gives us access to people we might not otherwise meet. Nice posting.

Thanks for the comments.

Valeria, people and passions is the whole point behind having an integrated solution within our existing networks rather than having to rely on yet another destination.

Mahendra, I don't really have enough experience with Quota to feel comfortable commenting about it (I would rather say nothing than talk rubbish) - a situation I know I should remedy but you can only spread yourself so thin

Good points here, Colin.

How about both? People *and* passions? Something that integrates with what you already have, helps filter content based upon who is sharing it. Coming soon, so watch my outposts, if interested.

Thanks Dan, glad you enjoyed it.

I don't think actually dropping Plus is an option. As it will be entwined through everything they do it would be pointless, and virtually impossible, to strip it all out again.

As I said in the post, people will use the social layer aspects regardless but may not specifically head to the social networking element out of choice - the networking component may, therefore, lose focus but will still exist.

We must remember that Plus isn't "intended" as a social network - that is just a necessary by-product of the layer and identity service.
